Recently I spent a couple of days with my daughter and her husband. This not only allowed me to have a nice visit with them but I also had Grandma time with their precious son.
On the second morning I lay in bed half awake, half asleep. I was conscious of the sounds of the three of them having early morning playtime but I was not quite ready to let go of my slumber.
The sounds disappeared and I felt someone sit on the edge of my bed and I heard them blow their nose. I figured it must be my daughter coming in to say hello but when I pried open my eyes there was no one there. I shook it off and went back to sleep.
Minutes later I again felt someone sitting down on the edge of the bed and once again I heard them blow their nose. I thought this just had to be her, but this time I reached out my arm. Nothing. I opened my eyes…no one was there. I told myself I must be dreaming.
When it happened again, I kept my eyes closed. Again I heard the person blow their nose, but this time I started picking up a visual. The blurry image leaned forward and tucked the handkerchief in his back pocket. It was my father. It brought tears to my eyes to see that familiar motion and his old red checkered hanky.
Though it was only for a brief time, my father and I had a great visit that morning and it was just what I needed. I feel fortunate that I finally ‘tuned in’ to him.
In our busy lives it’s seldom that we can clear our minds and drift into other levels of directed consciousness. Both at night and in the early morning—in that phase between deep sleep and wide awake—is a time that is ripe for tuning in.
Whether it’s a journey outside your body or a visit from someone in spirit, don’t shake it off. Appreciate the moment for the gift that it is.
